Hidden Eyes; Ep 1

I sighed. "No, I don't want your crap. Yes, I own a home - and I don't need your deals."
I shoved the phone back into the cradle, and glanced around for Harlow and Poko.
"Here, kitties," I called in a high pitched voice.
I didn't have to call twice before the two little balls of fluff came barreling out of my bedroom. I crouched down, smiling, and threw them both a bit of mince that I wasn't going to use for dinner. They purred as they ate, and Harlow hissed when Poko tried to eat hers.
    "Jay? You in here?"
I grinned, unintentionally, as Jhi made his way through the front door.
"Of course," I answered, almost purring, myself.
He smiled crookedly, sweetly, as he threw down the briefcases and wrapped his arms around me.
"I missed you," I whispered. "Don't leave like that again."
I felt him shake his head. "I won't. Work - well, you know what it's like these days. The world isn't what it used to be, Jay."
"Yeah, I understand." And I did, truly. Every night there was a murder to be carried out. Every day someone commited a crime that the police couldn't handle.
Every time, it was up to Hidden Figments, aka HF, to take care of it all.
"How's Poko doing with Harlow?" Jhi asked, his hands leaving me so that he could take off his tie and coat.
I shrugged. "They seem to do fine with each other. Poko - well, he is daring, should I say. And Harlow nearly chews his head off everytime he does something she doesn't approve of."
Jhi smirked. "Reminds me of someone else I know."
I shot him a look, and rolled my eyes.
    My eyes.
Once beautiful, and now a waste of space on my head. I looked away from Jhi and over the city lights as a tear ran down my cheek. I wasn't sad, though - I was furious. My parents were evil creatures, the worst waste of life ever made. They had tempers they couldn't control, but I suppose I shouldn't blame my mother, really. Even though she was two-faced - always nice to me when Lionel, my father, wasn't there, but when he came home, it was a different story - she still cared for me. Feeding me and giving me a home to stay at.
But wasn't that her duty? As a mother? I sighed as Jhi ran a hand down my back.
"Don't think about it, Jay," he whispered. He knew what was always on my mind. "You are beautiful."
My voice shook despite my efforts. "You h-have to say that..."
He spun me around, and put his hands on my shoulders, staring at me determindly. He swept the hair off my face, and traced a finger over my eyelid.
"Jhi-" His name locked my throat up, and I looked away again.
"Jaqueline, listen to me. You have no idea how stunning you really are, and I don't have to say that, although I love it-"
"Stop," I said, clearing my throat. "Please... I don't know how you see beauty in this-" I gestured to my face "-but I don't, so... So..."
He sighed, and pulled me to his chest. "You are such a sook."
I laughed once, and shoved him weakly.
    "Come on, let's eat."
Just a quick squiz into the life of Jaqueline Dawne-Lafreniere. (:
There might be more coming, not sure yet. :P
