CHAPTER 25: BEFORE THE LAST MOMENTS

   "Ha, ha, ha!"
I watched the creepy Redan 'king' laugh at us. He was faded, almost to a thin, wipsy white. His name was hard to pronounce - something like 'Jyagarenth', but that didn't matter at the moment. Jared stood beside me, his hand wrapped around mine.
"Alice," Jyagarenth boomed, still grinning evilly. "Why would you make it oh-se-easy for us to find you? Of course, I do not complain, but I must say that it would have been quite the chase had you not touched the Mist."
I didn't reply, simply staring at him dejectedly. Why did it matter what I said now? Although I had been optimistic before, looking at the guards and weapons they had, I really didn't think we stood a chance.
"What a creep," Sadie muttered from behind me.
Julietta laughed softly, and replied. "My poor Alex was stuck with that - that thing for years. I wonder if he passed on or not..."
I glanced up at Jared, but he kept his eyes on Jyagarenth. A cold shiver ran down my back, and it felt as if something ghostly had passed right through me. A Redan? Could they do that? I still had so much to learn, yet I felt as if I would never find out what they were.
"Well, short and sweet is what we want," Jyagarenth declared, looking about the room as if it were something he didn't want to say. "But, things must come to an end here - kill them."
But nothing moved. I heard Sadie giggle from behind me, and I wondered what she'd done.
   "I said kill them!"
I heard Julietta gasp from behind, and then, in a flash, all the guards, ghosts and creatures in the room charged. They came from every side of the massive space, and their armour bashing together wildly. I cowered into Jared.
   "I love you," I cried.
"I love you, too. Don't cry - you'll be fine. Just stay with me."
How would we even last? I turned to Julietta and Sadie, and watched in amazement as the army of Redan stopped in their tracks as Julietta started to rise, and a black mist followed her into the air. I looked to the Redan and saw their eyes flicking from side to side, yet they would not move.
Then, one by one, they fell like Dominos.
"What is she doing?" I whispered anxiously. "And why is everything so... calm? I thought we'd d-die in an instant..."
"Just watch, Alice," Jared replied in a whisper, holding my hand tighter.
Julietta's blue eyes started to darken until her whole iris was pitch black. Her hair, blonde and shining, tranformed into a flowing black river of silk-like hair. Her clothes had changed, not that I'd really noticed before what she was wearing, but I knew she hadn't been wearing a black and silver ball-gown. She started to murmur something, and the mist that swirled underneath her began to spread out into the crowds of ghosts, seeping through their armour, devouring everything. I buried my face in Jared as faint shrieks began to fill the hall.
"Better them than us, Alice," Jared whispered, though I could hear the pain in his voice.
He covered my ears with his hands, and waited until there was a thud on the ground to let go.
"Holy..." I couldn't finish as I glanced around the room, seeing nothing but piles upon piles of silver armour. "Where are they?"
   "Gone."
Jyagarenth began to clap, and I realised I'd forgotten he was even there. We turned to him again, but he wasn't alone.
   "Bravo," Jyagarenth said sarcastically.
I didn't listen to the rest of his pathetic speech, but only to Julietta as she gasped, and started to cry. I didn't turn to comfort her - I only watched the pain on the ghost's face that stood next to Jyagarenth.
"Alex," I heard Sadie gasp. "He never passed on."
I suddenly understood Jared's pained voice when he said 'better them than us' and Julietta saying 'I wonder if he passed on' before.
The Redan were the ghosts of the deceased. I concluded that you didn't pass right on to the 'spirit world' or whatever they had here, but you were made to be in the Redan first. If you died - too bad.
"... so, as it pains me to do so, I must leave you four to my greatest fighter," Jyagrenth finished his speech, and glanced at me one last time before disappearing.
"ALEX!" Julietta cried at the same time he roared, "JAY-TEE!"

This didn't pan out the way I'd hoped, but Julietta wouldn't let me kill them. xD

/EDIT/ - Again, the paragraphing is being silly. I'll fix ASAP.
